Elektra Observatory Receives GrantBy Jeff Green
Elektra Observatories has taken one
small step in its quest to raise $2 million for a state of the art
telescope on Mallory Hill, which is on Buckshot Lake Road near the
border between North Frontenac and Addington Highlands.
The not-for-profit corporation has received $14,000 from the Frontenac Community Futures Development Corporation towards Phase 1 of the project.
Frank Roy of Elektra said the money would be used to design the telescope. “Some of the money will be used to design the optical system and some of it to design the dome”.
The grant comes about as Roy continues to gather support from political bodies. Last week Lennox and Addington joined Frontenac County and the City of Bancroft in endorsing the project.
This week, Larry Pealow of the Addington Highlands Economic Development Committee joined Frank Roy in Perth for a meeting with MPP Randy Hillier. Further meetings are planned with MP Scott Reid and MPP Leona Dombrowsky, the Ontario Minister for Rural Affairs.
In a press release, Elektra Observatories said the project is now “on track to have ‘First Light’ in the fall of 2011.”
However, Roy admits that it will be necessary for some major fundraising to take place before that happens, and he is working with partners in two universities to seek those dollars from philanthropic organizations over the next few months.
