The Pioneer Cemetery will be the scene of a dedication ceremony on Sun. Aug. 9 at 2p.m. Representatives from area churches, dignitaries and community members will be on hand to pay respects and show appreciation to those who came before us.  The village of Cloyne, Ireland, has sent a letter of congratulations that will be read at the ceremony. We will have prayers, Irish music and historical snipits.

Ancestors of current residents are buried in the cemetery. Names of confirmed interred will be engraved on a plaque and mounted at the site. The Pioneer Cemetery is located on Little Pond Rd. in Cloyne and was totally overgrown, neglected since the end of the last century. It was all but forgotten until a group of hard-working members of the Land o’ Lakes Garden Club determined to clean it up and landscape the perimeter. Old wood crosses were duplicated and a bench built by generous neighbours. A committee of the Cloyne and District Historical Society spent long hours searching church and township records to determine the names of the people buried there. During the cleanup many volunteers came forward to lend a hand, tools, plants and even a backhoe.  This is truly a community landmark.
