Kick Off For Truth and Reconciliation Week

To mark the beginning of Truth and Reconciliation Week in Canada, Chief Doreen Davis of the Shabot Obaadjiwan First Nation, and Central Frontenac Mayor Frances Smith, gathered with members and staff from the Shabot Obaadjiwan, and Central Frontenac Township, at the Sharbot Lake beach. One of the flagpoles at the beach was designated early this year to be available for special events. After a smudging ceremony, The Sharbot Obaadjiwan flag was raised to half mast on that pole and the Canada and Ontario flags were lowered to half mast, in recognition of missing and murdered indigenous women.

After threatening weather all day, the sun shone and the temperature rose in advance of the flagpole raising at 4pm, and holding the ceremony at the water’s edge fit the occasion well.

On September 30, the national day for Truth and Reconciliation will be marked with an event at the same location.
