Bail Hearing delayed In Splinter Case

Matthew Splinter will spend another couple of weeks in jail to allow his legal team to fully prepare for a bail hearing in his case.

He was arrested on October 30th, and is facing 12 charges: 3 counts of “Dangerous Operation of a Conveyance Causing Death”, 3 counts of “Dangerous Operation of a Conveyance Causing Bodily Harm”, 3 counts of “Impaired Operation Causing Death”, and 3 counts of “Impaired Operation Causing Bodily Harm”.

His lawyers received a continuance on October 31, setting his bail hearing for November 14. The hearing at 9am on November 14 in court 1 at the Wellington Street Courthouse in Kingston was canceled. Splinter appeared before a judge later on November 14 by video link, and a second continuance was granted, and the hearing is now set for Friday, November 29th, courtroom to be determined.

In a report in the Whig Standard, Splinter’s lawyer, John Teleno-Levy, attributed the need for a further delay in the bail hearing to the large amount of content in the disclosure package that he received from the Crown. The Crown was ready to proceed on November 14.

Splinter’s charges all relate to a boat crash on Bobs Lake, which claimed the lives of Kaila Bearman, Juliette Cote, and Riley Orr, and sent others to hospital. Splinter was the driver of a boat called the “Y Wouldn’t Ya” which struck the boat where the three fatal victims were located.
